It is well and truly summertime! Sun glaring, hot sand, ice-cream dripping, summer! It can be a struggle to stay motivated and health-minded when staying inside in the air conditioning is so much nicer! And with all the festive overindulgence this can lead to unhealthy patterns heading into the new year. We have a few tips and tricks to keep in mind this summer to ensure you can be mentally and physically healthy.

Sun protection

With stronger sun rays in summer, extra caution is essential. Even a short drive with sunlight streaming through car windows can cause sunburn. Adding an extra layer of protection goes a long way in keeping your skin healthy. Make sunscreen a daily routine, applying it before you leave the house. If you dislike the texture or smell, many brands offer alternatives—your local pharmacist can recommend options to suit your skincare needs. Protecting your skin is worth finding the right product.

Wearing sunglasses outdoors is also important to shield your eyes from harsh glare. Ask your provider about the best tint for your needs, and don’t forget to explore our Premier Providers for great deals on eyewear - Optical Premier Providers | Queensland Country Health Fund

Stay Hydrated

If you struggle to drink enough water each day, now’s the time to find a method to help you track and stay on top of your hydration. Dehydration can lead to dry mouth, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, and, in severe cases, low blood pressure and a rapid heart rate. As a general guide, adults should drink between 2 to 2.5 litres of water daily. Here are some techniques to help you stay hydrated throughout the day:

  • Carry a 750ml–1L water bottle with you, drinking periodically, and refilling at least three times: once in the morning before you start your day, once around midday with lunch, and once in the afternoon.
  • Drink one cup of water every even hour you're awake. This will help you meet your daily requirements while being mindful of your hydration.
  • Keep 2.5 litres of cold water in your fridge. Drink throughout the day, and if you still have some left by evening, make sure to finish it (but pace yourself—drinking too much too quickly can make you unwell).
  • Flavour your water. There are many products to add flavour to your water, or you can simply add mint, cucumber, or frozen berries to make it more refreshing.

Take advantage of the seasonal fruit.

Summertime produces some of the sweetest seasonal fruits like Mango, Apricots, Cherries, Blackberries, Red grapes, lychees, and Plums. These fruits can be used in so many ways such as mixed with yoghurt for breakfast, in smoothies, salads, and Icy poles. These sweet treats can offer refreshing, sweet and healthy snack alternative to balance out all the sweets from the holiday season.
