Have you always wanted to start running, but didn't know where to start? Our Athletics Australia Level II Intermediate Recreational Running Coach, Karey Corrie, shares her best tips.
Run Technique Hacks
- Tell yourself to run quietly – loud footsteps mean your cadence is likely too slow
- Light and fast foot turnover mean less effort and more efficiency
- Chest up and eyes forward
Get your gear sorted
- Comfortable , light weight clothing
- Get it ready the night before you train and on race day
- Don’t wear anything new on race day
Race Day routine
- Eat 2-3 hours before start time or whatever is normal for you on training days
- Arrive early at the event
- Light warm up and you are ready to race
Positive Mindset
- Smile as you run
- Thank the volunteers
- Remember why you are running
Start Slow - Finish Fast
- When the gun goes – don’t get caught up in the pack excitement
- Too fast at the start means a struggle at the end
- Take it easier over the first 1km, steady through the middle
- Then finish strong
Finish Line Feeling
- Savour those last few hundred meters as you approach the line – you have worked for it
- Smile for the camera
- Ask yourself –what is one thing I am grateful for about that run experience
